What is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene takes its name from the monomer ethylene. It is produced using ethylene. In the plastics industry, it is generally referred to as PE. Polyethylene plastic can be of low or high density, can be shaped, poured into different molds. Polyethylene absorbs very little water in terms of its structure, it is a hard, and durable material type. Polyethylene is one of the most widely used types of thermoplastics in the world. It has a wide area of use in our daily life and industry.

Properties of Polyethylene;
It has generally low strength and hardness. Long sun exposure may cause fragility in their structure. As long as they are not exposed to the sun, they have severe impact resistance and do not show fragility. The resistance of polyethylene materials under static loads is quite high. They are similar to paraffin with many features. They are good electrical insulators. They start to melt after 120 °C and 130 °C. However, as the temperature increases, its strength decreases and it becomes unusable.

Types of Polyethylene:

  • Low-density polyethylene
  • Linear low-density polyethylene
  • High-density polyethylene
  • Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene
